Molecular relaxation in a photosensitive liquid-crystalline polymeric glass former

چکیده
We have measured the relaxation to equilibrium in the supercooled nematic phase upon approach to Tg of a fragile liquid-crystalline photosensitive polymeric glass former. Perturbation is introduced in a non-conventional way by optical pumping (orientation) of the nematic polydomain phase. Relaxation back to equilibrium is followed both on the microscopic scale, by means of depolarized time-resolved Raman experiments, and on the macroscopic scale, by means of quartz crystal microgravimetry.

Photoinduced Molecular Reorientation and Relaxation in a Liquid Crystalline Polymer
In this paper we present a study of photoinduced eeects, including molecular relaxation in a side chain liquid crystalline polymer. In particular, we have studied relaxation phenomena using Ellipsometry and Photoinduced Birefringence in pump-probe experiments, which were carried out as a function of temperature, optical pump intensity and sample preparation and history. Two speciic areas were i...
متن کاملMolecular relaxation and microscopic structure of multilayers and superlattices of a photosensitive liquid-crystalline polymer.
We report a detailed study of photoinduced changes in the microscopic structure of monolayers, multilayers, and superlattices of a photosensitive side chain liquid crystalline polymer, deposited by the Langmuir-Schaefer technique. We probe both out-of-plane and in-plane ordering and its changes due to optical pumping of the trans-cis photoisomerization transition of the azobenzene side chain in...

In this paper we report recent results by polarized FT-IR spectroscopy and by ellip-sometry on photoinduced eeects in thin Langmuir-Blodgett lms of an azobenzene side chain liquid crystalline polymer. In particular we address the structure of the as-grown LB multilayer, and the photoinduced mechanical and optical eeects as a function of temperature , optical perturbation and interaction with th...
متن کاملGlass transition and relaxation following PhotoPerturbation in thin polymeric films
In this letter we employ null ellipsometry on Langmuir Blodgett multilayers of a glass forming photosensitive side chain polymer to investigate both the structural changes and the related time relaxation as a function of temperature and sample thickness following isothermal optical perturbation. Below a thickness of a few layers the glassy multilayer system collapses to a smecticlike crystal. T...
متن کاملLooking for the glass transition in a single molecular layer on the water surface
We present here results which indicate that polymeric monolayers confined at the air–water interface may provide interesting model systems for the study of glass transition phenomenology in a strongly confined 2D geometry. We report on photoinduced relaxation of the pressure–area isotherms in Langmuir monolayers of a photosensitive polyacrylate, using null-ellipsometry to study the evolution of...
